Approximately 20-40% of women aged 35 and older have fibroids. While some patients may not suffer significant symptoms, Fibroids cause problems in many women.
CiC offers Uterine Fibroid Embolization, a minimally invasive treatment for symptomatic Fibroid tumors of the uterus.
What is Uterine Fibroid Embolization? (also known as UFE)
UFE (“YOU-fee”) is a highly effective way of treating fibroid tumors of the uterus. Fibroid tumors, also known as leiomyomas, are masses of abnormal fibrous and muscle tissue in the uterine wall. They are benign, but may cause heavy menstrual bleeding, bleeding or spotting in between periods, pain in the pelvic region, or pressure on the bladder or bowel.
With angiographic methods similar to those used in heart catheterization, your CiC physician places a catheter in each of the two uterine arteries and injects tiny microspheres to block the arterial branches that supply blood to the fibroids. Deprived of blood, the fibroid tissue dies, the masses shrink, and in almost all cases symptoms are improved or resolved completely.
UFE, performed under IV sedation at our center, is much less invasive than open surgery done to remove uterine fibroids. In fact, patients may go home a few short hours after their UFE procedure, so that they can rest and relax in familiar surroundings.
CiC physicians have been successfully performing UFE in Arizona since 1997. Don’t you want to be able to count on that level of experience when it comes to your health?
